Fundamentals of Vacuum Pumps (Low to Medium Vacuum)

What is the difference between one-stage and two-stage dry pumps?

This section explains the difference in a situation that has 2 pumps chambers with a dry pump powered by a motor.

One-stage type:
A pump with two pump chambers connected in parallel to increase the exhaust volume is a one-stage type. The pump with one pump room is, of course, a one-stage type.

Two-stage type:
A pump with two pump chambers connected in series to increase the compression ratio is a two-stage type. There are also a three-stage type and a four-stage type.
